Online valuation tools give you a range. A dealer gives you a number. The gap between them is not deception — it is the difference between an average of national transactions and a bid on your specific vehicle in this specific market this week.

How the number is actually built

A dealer starts from what the vehicle will realistically retail for locally, then subtracts reconditioning, the cost of holding it while it sells, and a margin. If the vehicle is not one the dealer retails, the baseline becomes the wholesale auction price instead, which is lower — that is why a Ford dealer may bid less on your Subaru than a Subaru specialist.

The eight factors that move your number most

  1. Mileage relative to age. Roughly 12,000 miles a year is the benchmark; being well under it is worth real money.
  2. Accident history. A reported accident costs value even after a perfect repair, because the report follows the car forever.
  3. Tyres and brakes. These are immediate reconditioning costs and get deducted almost dollar for dollar.
  4. Service records. A documented history is worth several hundred dollars on its own — it converts an unknown into a known.
  5. Colour. White, black, silver and grey sell fastest. Unusual colours take longer and get bid accordingly.
  6. Number of keys. A missing second key is a $200–$500 replacement on modern vehicles and will be deducted.
  7. Warning lights. A check-engine light turns a known quantity into an unknown one and gets priced defensively.
  8. Timing. Convertibles bid higher in spring, all-wheel drive bids higher in autumn, trucks are steadier than anything else all year.

What to do before you get an offer

  • Clean it properly, inside and out. Detailing costs under $200 and reliably returns more than that.
  • Fix cheap cosmetic items — a burnt-out bulb, a missing cap, a torn wiper.
  • Do not do major mechanical work purely to sell. You rarely recover it.
  • Gather the title, both keys, the owner’s manual and every service record you have.
  • Get more than one offer. Written offers are competitive information and dealers know it.

The tax angle people miss in Georgia

Trading in reduces the value on which your Title Ad Valorem Tax is calculated when you buy from a dealer. A private sale does not. That difference can be worth several hundred dollars, and it means a trade-in offer slightly below a private-party price can still be the better financial outcome once the tax treatment and your time are counted.

Get the offer in writing with an expiry date. A verbal number is a conversation; a written offer is a floor you can shop against.
