Free — no commission

Rent out your vehicle, keep every dollar

Got a car, van or truck sitting unused? List it here for renters who are already on this site looking for one. No listing fee and we take no cut of your rate. There is one condition, and it is not negotiable: you need insurance that actually permits renting it out.

Selling rather than renting? List it for sale free — same deal, no commission.

Read this before you go any further

A standard personal auto policy almost always excludes renting your vehicle to someone else. If you rent it out on that policy and something happens, the claim can be denied and you can be left personally liable for the damage, the injuries and the legal costs.

This is not us being cautious on your behalf. It is the single most common way people renting out their own car get badly hurt financially.

Before you list: call your insurer and ask, in these words — “does my policy cover me to rent this vehicle to a paying driver?” If the answer is no, you need commercial or rental cover in place first. Carvista does not provide insurance, does not arrange it, and cannot advise you on it.

How it works

Four steps, and none of them cost you anything

1. Send the details

The vehicle, your daily rate, and what cover you carry. The insurance question is not optional — see below.

2. We check the basics

Ownership, that the registration is current, and that you have told us cover that actually permits renting it out.

3. It goes live

Your listing runs for 60 days on this site, clearly marked as an owner's vehicle and not ours.

4. Renters contact you

Enquiries go straight to you. You check their licence, you agree the terms, you keep every dollar.

The rules

What we will and will not list

We will list a vehicle that is registered, roadworthy, insured for rental use, and owned by the person listing it.

We will not list a vehicle with a salvage or rebuilt title, one with an outstanding safety recall, one you do not own, or one where the owner cannot tell us what cover they hold. We will also not list for anyone operating as a rental company — this is for owners with a vehicle or two, not a fleet. 2 listings per person.

What we are not doing: taking a commission, handling payment, holding a deposit, providing a rental agreement, screening renters, checking licences, insuring anything, or being a party to the rental. The arrangement is entirely between you and the renter.

Insurance

We ask this first because it is the part that matters most. An honest “I need to check” is a perfectly good answer — we will simply wait until you have.

Renting out your vehicle: questions

Does my normal car insurance cover this?

Almost certainly not. Personal auto policies generally exclude renting the vehicle to others, which means a claim during a rental can be denied outright and leave you personally liable. Before you list, ring your insurer and ask specifically whether your policy covers renting the vehicle to a paying driver. If the answer is no, you need commercial or rental cover first. We are not insurance advisers and we do not provide any cover.

Is listing my vehicle for rent free?

Yes. No listing fee, no commission, no cut of what you charge. You keep the whole rate.

Does Carvista handle the money or the booking?

No. Enquiries go straight to you and you deal with the renter directly. We do not take payment, hold a deposit, provide a rental agreement, or become a party to the rental.

Who checks the renter?

You do. You verify their driving licence, satisfy yourself they are insured to drive it, and decide whether to hand over the keys. We do not screen renters and we cannot vouch for anyone who contacts you.

Carvista rents cars too — are you competing with me?

We do rent vehicles, and yes, a renter on this site may choose ours instead of yours. We are telling you that up front rather than leaving you to work it out. What we will not do is bury your listing or use it as bait: it appears with the same prominence as the for-sale listings, and it is labelled honestly.

What happens if the renter damages it?

That is between you, the renter and your insurer. Carvista has no involvement in the rental and no liability for it. This is the part people underestimate, which is why we ask about cover before anything else.

How long does the listing stay up?

60 days. Tell us any time and we will take it down sooner — no questions, no notice period.

Do I have to bring the vehicle to your lot?

No. It stays with you the whole time. We host the listing, nothing else.

Will my listing appear on Cars.com or CarGurus?

No. Those are dealer inventory feeds and your vehicle is not our inventory. Putting it there would misrepresent it as our stock, so we do not do it — for rental listings or for sale listings.

Would you rather sell it than rent it?

Renting earns over time and needs cover, admin and your attention. Selling is one transaction and done. Both are free to list here.
